Gateway by Frederik Pohl
So, I try to burn through a science fiction book every now and then. I don’t read as much as I used to, but still have time occasionally. This time around I picked up a book written by Frederik Pohl. His Gateway series (The Heechee Saga) is listed as one of the best science fiction stories out there, so I decided to give it a shot. This isn’t really a book review, just a rambling opinion. Much respect to the science fiction authors out there, you write the stories I dream about, keep up the fantastic work.
Now, I’ll be honest, I didn’t really like this book very much. Something about the switching back and forth between timelines just kind of threw me. The story itself was fun, but I prefer something a bit more linear. The science elements, and the alien Heechee were spot on. While the main character, Rob Broadhead, felt like a non-charismatic schlub.
After the read, I did not want to continue on with the series. Speaking with a friend of mine though, has convinced me the rest of the books in the series are definitely worth my time. If anyone out there has read this one, let me know. I’d like to hear a few other opinions.
